Cultural Affairs League – Falkirk’s Guardian Angels

The Cultural Affairs Service League (CASL) at Falkirk is our very own volunteer auxiliary. Formed in 1979, it's been around for 25 years. Members make things happen at Falkirk - from special events to art openings to docent tours and fundraising.

CASL is the heart and soul of this grand old Victorian. Members host teas, bake and prepare refreshments for our Victorian Holiday, Teddy Bear Tea, and Egg Hunt in Wonderland, the Italian Street Painting Festival Artists Dinner and other events. They fundraise, plan events, and take care of the interior of the house. They research, advise and fund interior renovation and improvements. Above all, CASL meets regularly here at Falkirk and keeps watch so that it stays beautiful and well-maintained within our financial means.

Member Lois Sherbert was a founding member of CASL. She continues to act as the volunteer coordinator for the group and oversees all of their event hosting activities. She loves Falkirk and has dedicated thousands of hours of service toward its upkeep and vitality. Jackie Hazelrigg has only been a member for a few years, yet she is the active and passionate president of the group. Jackie says Falkirk has been fortunate “to have such willing and capable volunteers” in the group. Her goal is to raise money for the floors, woodwork and windows that need refinishing. Regina Buchanan, a past-president, remembers the first time she visited Falkirk in 1976, before the formation of CASL. “There is something about the place when you walk in” she says, that makes you want to stay and be a part of it. Another member, Margaret Rolly, joined CASL in the very beginning. She remembers fondly how the members were “always trying to improve the place, as if it were our own.” This is the spirit that drives CASL, and for this the City and staff at Falkirk are grateful.

It can honestly be said that without CASL, Falkirk would not be where it is today and would not have accomplished nearly what it has in the past two and a half decades. Thank you, CASL members, for the hard work, dedication and fun-loving graciousness you’ve brought to Falkirk. To become a member or learn more about CASL, please call Lois Kirkendall at 472-3469. CASL meets the second Monday of the month at 10am at Falkirk.

Special thanks to Tina Coviello, for writing the CASL historical document, some of which was excerpted for this article.
